Greece’s Tax Policies for Digital Nomads

In the summer of 2021, the EU member state Greece officially implemented its Digital Nomad Visa through the enactment of Law 4825/2021. Applicants can obtain a visa valid for up to 12 months, and upon meeting the eligibility criteria, they can apply for a 2-year residence permit. Additionally, residence permit holders who meet the renewal requirements may eventually qualify for citizenship. One key renewal condition is that applicants must reside in Greece for more than 6 months per year.

Since the Digital Nomad Visa must be applied for directly through Greek embassies, it is considered to have high credibility and value.

Application Requirements for Greece’s Digital Nomad Visa

  1. Work Requirements:
    Applicants must work for an employer or clients outside Greece via information and communication technology and must pledge not to provide services to Greek employers or clients.
  2. Proof of Employment or Business:
    • For employees: Applicants must submit their employment contract as proof of work. If the contract has a fixed term, the term must not be shorter than the visa’s validity period.
    • For self-employed individuals: Applicants must provide detailed business information, including the company name, office location, industry, and business activities.
  3. Criminal Record Clearance:
    Applicants must provide a certificate proving they have no criminal record.
  4. Health Requirements:
    Applicants must purchase sufficient health insurance and undergo a medical examination to prove they are in good health.
  5. Proof of Accommodation:
    Applicants must provide a valid Greek address.

Proof of Income:
Applicants must demonstrate a monthly income of at least €3,500 (approximately RMB 26,500) to cover living expenses. If accompanied by a spouse, the monthly income requirement increases to €4,200 (approximately RMB 31,800). For each child, an additional 15% is added to the monthly income requirement.

Note: While spouses and children can accompany the applicant under the Digital Nomad Visa, they are not permitted to work or engage in any economic activity in Greece.
