Tax Appeal of Cambodian Immigration

Tax Appeal of Cambodian Immigration

Surprisingly, our neighboring country Cambodia has an investment immigration program, though it's relatively under the radar. The main reason for its limited popularity is the poor value proposition. Let's first look at the program details:

  • Investment of 1.25 billion riels (approximately $310,000) in designated investment projects
  • Donation of 1 billion riels (approximately $250,000)

Theoretically, one can obtain a passport within 3-6 months after completing the investment and donation. Its low appeal primarily stems from very limited visa-free access: according to Henley & Partners' passport rankings, it ranks 95th with visa-free access to just 53 countries. In comparison, the Chinese passport offers visa-free access to 79 countries, while Caribbean nations exceed 100 countries. Moreover, it's said that Cambodian investment immigration isn't guaranteed success, which also contributes to its limited popularity.

Nevertheless, some people still consider obtaining a Cambodian passport, mainly for investment convenience within the country. So, is Cambodia equally unappealing in terms of taxation?
